授業の目的?内容
/Course Objectives
This one-semester course is compulsory for first-year students and takes place twice a week. The course is not meant to privilege either skill over the other but is envisioned to develop reading comprehension skills while guiding students to produce well-structured argumentative essays on the topics they have explored in readings. The aim is to develop active reading skills through exploration of a text and discussions related to it. With writing, the aim is for students at all levels to learn the fundamentals of English essay writing by practicing argumentative essays, (other types of essays such as compare & contrast, cause & effect, expository, narrative can be covered in the second semester (RWS II).


Overall Objectives- Reading
1. To understand how argumentative, or persuasive, texts are structured.
2. To make connections between the text to self, text to text, and text to world.

Overall Objectives - Writing
1. To understand and practice structuring an argumentative essay in English with an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, and learn essential essay components such as a hook sentence, thesis statement, and topic sentences.
2. To learn to structure arguments and develop ideas logically and effectively in paragraphs.

This course focuses on developing students’ combined reading and writing skills, specifically: "vocabulary," "grammar" and "reading" skills, as stated in DP 2 for them to acquire the basics of both "written receptive skills," (reading) and "written productive skills," (writing) as stated in the CP.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意
/Teaching method and Attention the course
The first lesson of each week will focus on introduction, explanation and demonstration of the writing process using a model for reading and writing. This will be followed by relevant application of skills to tasks for the model topic.
The second lesson of each week will focus on students using the writing process for exploration and application of skills to tasks for a topic of their choosing.
Updated and more detailed information will be provided in the first class.

Feedback will be provided by a score and comments for each written evaluation item given during the course.

Must have a PC with access to the internet, Microsoft Word/PowerPoint for every lesson throughout the course.

Students should prepare before each lesson by completing assigned homework / tasks (30-60 minutes). Students should review lesson notes after each lesson and ensure all classwork is complete (30-60 minutes).
